55 East Monroe has been a jewel in Chicago's skyline crown for over 30 years and now, thanks to a transformation that will turn the buildings' upper floors into luxurious condominium homes, city dwellers are invited to own a piece of that crown for themselves. Critics of the project, however, point out that the units are long and narrow and will not allow residents to bask in as much natural light as some other developments. It is too early to tell how successful these layouts will be, but the word on the street is that the building is almost half sold out of first-phase units. Others are concerned about plans for a new facade on the upper third of the building, which could change the artistic integrity of the structure as a whole.
