Aspen 6

Hands-off investors speculating with their money in a for-profit venture are behind the development of most residential properties. While there is nothing wrong with this common method of doing business, some buildings are designed and built with a different concept in mind. Aspen 6, located at 1915 N. Damen Avenue in Chicago, is such a building. Architects Attilla and Katalin Demeter, who are known to design and inhabit their own projects, are developing the six-unit project. The Demeters bring a higher-than-most level of quality and aesthetics to the often cookie-cutter residential market, and provide original solutions to common problems at competitive prices. The end results are unique homes built with the urban professional in mind.

The main challenge faced by the Demeters in the Aspen 6 project was to provide the amenities found in a suburban single-family home (safety, privacy, security, light, space, and outdoor areas) in the typical less-than-roomy urban setting. The units here succeed at this through their use of large amounts of glass, high ceilings, and open floor plans. The spaces expand and flow from level to level and indoors to outdoors very smoothly, each an extension of the other. There is also an element of environmental consciousness that is built into the design of Aspen 6. The project features things like roof overhangs and windows that block the high summer sun, yet allow the lower winter sunlight in, excellent cross-ventilation that saves on air conditioning costs, and heavy masonry and insulation that helps control indoor temperatures. All residential units are two- and three-bedroom spaces and are located on the 2nd-5th floors, with limited commercial space available at street level. All the units are duplexed condos that range in size from 1500 to 2700 square feet, overlook a central courtyard, and feature large private terraces, gourmet kitchens, and all the other amenities that make homebuyers stand up and take notice. Shoppers will find floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors, high-end stainless steel appliances, premium cabinets and counter tops, gas fireplaces, washer and dryer hook-ups, and other luxurious finishes. Penthouse units have private elevator access and indoor garage parking is included in the price of all homes.

As is the case with many smaller residential developments of this nature, sales go quickly and units can be difficult to obtain. The project website, www.aspen6.com, claims that only one dwelling is left for sale. The website is probably the best bet for up-to-the-minute information on all things Aspen 6 and anyone interested in that last remaining home needs to log on and make it happen, as no one is expecting it to last too much longer.
