Lake Point Tower

The Lake Point Tower was designed by John Heinrich and George Schipporeit, both of them are students of Mies van der Rohe. The design for Lake Point Tower was inspired by a sketch Mies van der Rohe made in 1921. Their initial idea was to make it with 4 wings, but at the end, a design with only 3 wings was chosen, because of the advantages it provides – shorter construction time and a 120 degree angle between the wings, so that the apartments would not face each other. The tower sits on a raised platform with a private park above and parking beneath. This type of design also offers less surface area exposed to direct wind loads in comparison to the conventional rectangular designs. In that way, the building is more stable and generally safer.

Back in the days of its completion – 1968, Lake Point Tower was the highest residential building in the world with its height of 197 meters. The 70 floor building had a beautiful restaurant on the top floor. Now, after the completed condo conversion, several types of floor plans are available.
