Evanston has been experiencing a renaissance of construction and home building in recent years and has seen demand for living space, and the prices for that space, continue to rise. One of the most anticipated residential buildings going up in Chicago’s first suburb to the north is that of the Winthrop Club Condominiums. Located at 1567 Maple in the heart of downtown Evanston, the 15 story tower aims to provide the kind of upscale condo living a Chicago high-rise brings to its residents, without actually entering the city. Winthrop Club is also a “green” building and meets the standards for Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, which improves energy efficiency and air quality in the all of the Winthrop’s 110 units.

The property is being developed by Winthrop Properties and offers a variety one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans to home shoppers. There are even four penthouse units on the 15th floor. The homes feature all the luxurious amenities buyers get excited over, including floor-to-ceiling low-e windows and the outstanding views of the North Shore, Lake Michigan, and the Chicago skyline that come with them, premium-grade carpeting in the bedrooms, full-size washers and dryers, oversized private balconies (per plan), and environmentally sensible bamboo flooring in all living areas. Kitchens come equipped with a buyer’s choice of granite countertop colors, stainless steel sinks, 42” custom Italian cabinets, stainless GE appliances, Koehler faucets, and designer lighting. The master bath’s feature marble countertops with single or double bowl sinks, floor-to-ceiling designer tiles, Koehler fixtures, soaking tubs, and oversized showers. Prices start in the 300’s. The homes are targeted at well-to-do empty nesters that want to give up their large North Shore homes and lawns for a taste of high-rise city living. Deliveries are expected to begin in late 2008.

The actual Winthrop Club building is as luxurious as its units and has an elegant lobby with 24-hour doorman, a fitness center, a club room with home theater gear, individual storage lockers and separate bicycle room, high-speed elevators, and one to three indoor parking spots (per plan) that are included in the price of each unit. Guest parking is also available. The Club’s location is mere steps from Evanston’s finest shopping and entertainment options and there are 70 restaurants within a ten- minute walk from the property. Access to Metra and CTA trains is easy, as well as Northwestern University, the lakefront, and a public beach.

The homes are going up under the care of Winthrop Properties, a firm whose principals, Ibrahim Shilhadeh and Bob Horner, have many years of experience in residential construction and real estate development. They have worked together on many successful properties in the Chicago area, including the Evanston Galleria. Interested parties can drop by the project’s sales center at 1707 Benson Avenue in Evanston.
